Chester Cathedral           [Printable Version (opens in a new window)]

In 1092, the Saxon church dedicated to St Werburgh became a Benedictine abbey and a church in the Norman style was built, part of which can be seen in the north transept. The Abbey was rebuilt in the gothic style between 1250 and 1520, and became a cathedral in 1541. The monastic buildings of the abbey have survived to a greater extent than those of many other English cathedrals. The Cathedral's choir has some of the best medieval carved woodwork in the country. Exhibition, refectory and gift shop.
