Cheshire - A County Of Gardens

Few other areas of the UK can boast the range and number of superb gardens that can be found in this famously green fingered county.

At least one in eight of all garden visits in Britain takes place in Cheshire - a fact that cannot have escaped the attention of the Royal Horticultural Society, because they chose one of the county's most famous stately homes to be the venue for one of their most prestigious gardening events. The RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park, near Knutsford takes place each July with 25 acres of floral marquees, show gardens and exotic displays as well as courtyard gardens, trade stands and practical demonstrations.

Also taking place in Cheshire during the year are the perennially popular garden festivals at Ness Botanical Gardens in South Wirral and Arley Hall, near Northwich, both scheduled for June.

Of course, it is a simple matter to enjoy Cheshire's many gardens at any time.

Arley's historic herbaceous borders are at their best in July when they provide a breathtaking array of colour. The lake in Tatton's newly restored Japanese Garden evokes the Orient most splendidly when reflecting the autumn shades of overhanging maples; and springtime visitors to Bridgemere can witness the living sunshine of daffodils which are planted in stunning displays.

Whether at the RHS Flower Show or admiring snowdrops in the winter quiet of a stately home, Cheshire is, indeed, the pick of gardening destinations.
