Web Browser Accessibility Features



MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER

You can navigate your browser using only the keyboard in Internet Explorer. Use shortcut keys to view and explore Web pages, use the Address bar, work with favorites, and edit. To view Internet Explorer's shortcut keys, go to:

Help -> Contents and Index -> Accessibility -> Keyboard shortcuts

Specifying Font Size

To select a specific font size, go to:

View -> Text Size

Specifying Font Style

Select a specific Web page font and plain text font at:

Tools -> Internet Options -> General Tab -> Fonts

Arial, Century Gothic, Tahoma, Tahoma Bold, and Verdana are believed to be the most accessible fonts because they do not have serifs and are not script or calligraphy fonts.

Specifying Alt Text For Images

To expand ALT text for images, select the check box at:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced Tab -> Always expand ALT text for images

This ensures that text equivalents will be provided for images.

Specifying colors

Internet Explorer allows you to specify the colors of the text, the background and foreground colors, and the colors of the links. This is a useful tool if you need high contrast colors. To select your color preferences, go to:

Tools -> Internet Options -> General Tab -> Colors

Keyboard shortcuts

In Netscape Navigator, you can use keyboard equivalents for the Back and Forward buttons. Back: press ALT + left arrow. Forward: press ALT + right arrow. Go to:

Help -> Help Contents -> Index -> Keyboard -> Can I navigate without using a mouse?

Specifying font size and style

Choose a specific font style and size at:

Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Fonts

You can also specify whether you want to use the document-specified fonts or your own default fonts, which will override the other fonts.

Specifying colors

Netscape Navigator allows you to specify text, background, and link colors. In addition, you have the option to use color preferences which will override the document colors. Go to:

Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Colors
